The short version
- Your camera video never leaves your device. It is analysed in your browser and is never recorded, uploaded or stored.
- We store your account, your classes and learning work, and numerical focus estimates, so the app can show your progress.
- Teachers see focus numbers only from live sessions in their class that you choose to join. Classmates never see your data.
- NeuroBuddy questions are sent to an AI service to be answered. Don’t share personal details with it.
- No advertising, no tracking or analytics scripts, and we never sell your data.
Who we are
Neuro-Focus (neurofocus.site) is a Final Year Project (FYP-F25-12) built by Muhammad Bilal Khalid and Namaika Sabir at the Department of Software Engineering, The University of Lahore. It is a study-support and classroom tool, not a medical or diagnostic service. We are responsible for the data described here. You can reach us at contact@neurofocus.site.
Your camera
The camera only turns on when you start a focus session or join a live class session, and your browser asks your permission first. While it is on, your browser finds points on your face (such as eye and head position) and turns them into an estimated engagement score, a few times a second.
- This all happens on your own device. Video and images are never sent to us or anyone else, and never saved.
- The score is an estimate of whether you seem to be looking at the screen. It does not measure understanding, and it is not a diagnosis of anything.
- You can stop the camera or take a break at any time.
What we store
Your account
- Your email address and password (stored securely by our sign-in provider, never visible to us in plain text). If you continue with Google, we receive your name and email address from Google.
- Your display name and whether you are a student or a teacher.
- Optional profile settings: a chosen avatar or a profile picture you upload, and your theme and colour choices.
Classes and learning
- The classes you create or join, and attendance for live sessions (when you were invited, joined and how long you attended).
- Class posts, assignments, files you submit, marks and feedback.
- Quiz questions, your answers and your results.
- Notes you write in the app.
Focus estimates
- For each focus session: when it started and ended, time tracked, average score, focus percentage, number of focus lapses and your longest focused streak.
- Individual readings during the session: a time, a score and a state (for example “looking at screen”, “looking away”, “break” or “unavailable”). Time when tracking can’t get a reading is recorded as unavailable, not as zero.
NeuroBuddy usage
- A daily count of NeuroBuddy requests per student, used to apply a fair-use limit. The content of your chats is not stored on our servers (see below).
NeuroBuddy and the AI service
NeuroBuddy answers questions using a third-party AI service (Google’s Gemini API by default). When you ask something, we send that service your message, the recent messages in that chat, the name of the class you picked for context, and the text of any files or pictures you added to the chat. We do not send your name or email address.
The AI service processes this content to produce an answer and handles it under its own terms, which may allow it to keep or review content. Please don’t share personal or sensitive information with NeuroBuddy. Answers can be wrong, so check important information.
When you use “Organize rough notes” or make a quiz or flashcards, the text you provide is sent to the AI service in the same way.
Stored only on your device
Some things are kept in your browser’s local storage on the device you use, and are not uploaded to us:
- Your NeuroBuddy chats, including the text of files you added to them, and flashcard decks.
- Your focus timer, today’s plan, your preferences and meeting links you save.
- A short log of recent focus readings that you can export yourself.
- Your sign-in session, so you stay signed in.
Anyone with access to your device and browser profile could see these. Clearing your browser’s site data for neurofocus.site removes them. We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies.
Services we use
- Supabase: sign-in, database, file storage and the server function that talks to the AI service.
- The AI service behind NeuroBuddy (Google’s Gemini API by default), as described above.
- Google: only if you choose “Continue with Google” to sign in.
- Netlify: hosts the website.
- Content delivery networks (Google Fonts, jsDelivr, unpkg, cdnjs and Google Cloud Storage) supply fonts, icons, code libraries and the face-landmark model to your browser.
These providers receive technical information such as your IP address and browser type when your browser connects to them, and may keep short-term logs for security and reliability under their own privacy policies.
How long we keep it, and deleting it
We keep your account and learning data while your account exists, so you and your teachers can see past sessions and work. A teacher can remove you from a class, and you can leave a class.
To delete your account and the data stored with it, or to get a copy of your data, email contact@neurofocus.site from the address you sign in with. We’ll respond within 30 days. Data kept on your own device can be removed by clearing your browser’s site data.
Your choices
- The camera is optional. You can use notes, classes, quizzes and NeuroBuddy without it.
- Focus numbers are shared with a teacher only while you are in their live session, and you can leave at any time.
- You can change your name, picture, email and password in Profile settings.
- You can ask us to access, correct or delete your data at any time.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS. Database access rules limit each person to the data described above, and uploaded files are stored privately. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong password and sign out on shared computers.
Students and schools
Neuro-Focus is meant for students using it through their school or university. If you are under 18, please use it with your parent’s or school’s permission. Schools using Neuro-Focus with their students are responsible for any consent their own rules require.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle data, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
